The Digestive System of Strasbourg
The city's food supply system is a domain that is closely related to people's lives but is easily overlooked. For thousands of years, the city 's food importation, distribution, sales, consumption, waste collection and technology have been going through tremendous evolution towards more efficient, economical and accessible forms, but it is undeniable that from the perspective of resource and energy sustainability, much remains to be achieved. Strasbourg, as a pioneer among green cities in Europe, has carried out a number of studies and introduced many innovations in the past ten years on this subject. However, these interventions are relatively individual and punctual. This project tries to imagine, taking Strasbourg as its site, how to approach a systemic change of the whole network and what would result in the urban space. This transformation includes both the renovation of existing food spaces, as well as the concept of potential new food production, consumption, and recycling space in the city, and all these spaces will be connected by a tram-cargo bike system in order to replace the existing truck-based food transportation system, thereby achieving a more sustainable future. Finally, the design hopes to further explore the social significance brought by this concept, which is how to build a more complementary, collaborative and resilient social network through the food system.
